Telnet was the standard protocol used for connecting to WPIs server prior to the requirement of using an SSH connection. Telnet was used on campus as a noun and a verb.

Background

Students and faculty (and some staff) would frequently telnet to ccc.wpi.edu to check their e-mail, use TurnIn, or access personal files.

Security Concerns

As of August 1, 2003, telnet access was no longer allowed due to it sending password information over an "insecure medium". This security concern also removed FTP access in favor of SFTP.

Successors

In its wake, two SSH clients, TeraTerm and PuTTY, gained mass adoption by the WPI community.
