A Mailing List, sometimes refered to as an "alias", is an e-mail address that points to one or several other e-mail addresses. Mailing lists may even point to other mailing lists. At other institutions, a mailing list may be referred to as a list serve, list serv, or listproc.

Types of Mailing ListsEdit

OpenEdit

An open mailing list is one to which anyone can email. The contents of an open mailing list are WPI-viewable. Subscribing and unsubscribing from an open mailing list requires owner action, either through the mailing list mangement form or directly editing the mailing list on the server.

Examples of this type of list are:

  • atwpi@wpi.edu
  • senators@wpi.edu
  • dailyccmenu@wpi.edu

Majordomo ModeratedEdit

A majordomo moderated list is one to which only certain people can email. Majordomo moderated in this case refers to a list which requires an approval password for messages to be sent. Particular message syntax or scripts allow for a message to be constructed with the proper headers to allow release of the message. Generally messages sent to this type of list are in plaintext format. Generally only members of this type of list may see the other members; some settings do not even allow for this freedom. Changes to a majordomo moderated list are executed via the mailing list management form or by sending specialized commands to majordomo@wpi.edu.

Examples of this type of list are:

  • undergraduates@wpi.edu
  • weather-broadcast@wpi.edu

ClosedEdit

A closed mailing list is a special subset of majordomo moderated lists. Closed mailing lists have approval passwords like majordomo moderated lists, but the approval password is not needed to send a message to the list. A closed list has certain configurations changed which permit only members of the list to send messages and allow for the approval password to be disregarded. Generally only members of this type of list may see the other members. Changes to a closed list are executed via the mailing list management form or by sending specialized commands to majordomo@wpi.edu.

  • student organizations

Mailing List QuirksEdit

  • On at least one occasion, the same mailing list belonged (at least according to /+mailinglist) to two people at the same instance.
  • The directory /shared/aliases on UNIX is used to view and edit open mailing lists.
